How to create a WhatsApp link

  1. Step 01

    Choose the country

Pick the country of the WhatsApp number. Its calling code is added for you, so you only type the rest.

  2. Step 02

    Type the number

Write the number the way you usually do, with the area code. Spaces, dashes and brackets are removed automatically.

  3. Step 03

    Write the message

Add the message people will start the chat with, or tap one of the examples. It is optional.

  4. Step 04

    Copy and share

Copy the link, copy the HTML for your website, or download the QR code. Test it with the open chat button.

What you get

  • A message ready to send

The chat opens with your text already typed, so people only press send. Line breaks and accents are encoded correctly.

  • Link, HTML and QR code

Use the wa.me link in a bio or an email, the HTML on your website and the QR code on posters, menus and business cards.

  • Works with any number

Personal and WhatsApp Business numbers use the same link. A number typed with a plus sign is read as complete, from any country.

  • Private and free

No account and no server: the number and the message stay in your browser. The link only opens WhatsApp when someone clicks it.

How a WhatsApp link works

A WhatsApp link, also called a click to chat link, has the form https://wa.me/ followed by the full number with the country code, and optionally ?text= followed by the message. When someone opens it, WhatsApp starts a chat with that number and puts the message in the text box.

The number goes without a plus sign, spaces, dashes, brackets or leading zeros. For a United States number such as +1 (415) 555-0132 the link is wa.me/14155550132. The generator removes those characters for you and adds the calling code of the country you chose.

The message is added to the address in an encoded form, where spaces, accents and line breaks turn into codes such as %20 and %0A. Very long messages make long links, and some apps cut those off, so keep the text short. The generator warns you when a link gets too long.

Use the link wherever people can tap: the bio of a social profile, an email signature, a button on your website or a message. Use the QR code where they can only scan, such as a poster, a shop window, a menu or a business card.

Frequently asked questions

What is a WhatsApp link?

It is a web address that opens a WhatsApp chat with a given number, with or without a message already typed. It starts with wa.me and works on phones and in WhatsApp Web.

How do I create a WhatsApp link with a message?

Choose the country, type the number, write the message and copy the link. The tool puts the number and the encoded message together as wa.me/number?text=message.

What format does the number need?

The full number with the country code and nothing else: no plus sign, spaces, dashes, brackets or leading zeros. You can type it naturally and the tool cleans it. A number that starts with + is treated as already complete.

Can the person chat with me without saving my number?

Yes. Opening the link starts the chat directly, without adding the number to the contacts.

Does it work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. WhatsApp Business numbers use the same wa.me links.

Is my number sent to a server?

No. The link and the QR code are made in your browser, and this tool sends nothing about the number or the message anywhere. WhatsApp only gets involved when someone opens the link.

Why does WhatsApp say the number is not available?

Check the country code and the digits. The number must be on WhatsApp, and in a few countries WhatsApp expects an extra digit in mobile numbers, such as the 9 used in Argentina.

Does the link expire?

No. A WhatsApp link keeps working as long as the number is on WhatsApp. Create a new one only if the number or the message changes.

Can I create a link for a WhatsApp group?

Not with this tool, which links to one number. Group invite links are created inside WhatsApp, from the settings of the group.
