How net salary works in Germany
Income tax (Lohnsteuer) follows a progressive formula from 14% to 42%, then 45% above €277,825. It is charged on the gross pay minus the employee allowance of €1,230, the special expenses allowance of €36 and the insurance contributions the withholding recognises. Married couples in tax class III are taxed on half of the income, twice.
The solidarity surcharge of 5.5% of the income tax only applies above €20,350 of tax for single filers, so most employees do not pay it. Church tax is 8% or 9% of the income tax, only for members of a church.
Social insurance is shared between employee and employer: pension 9.3% each up to €101,400, unemployment 1.3% each, health about 8.75% each and care 1.8% each up to €69,750. Employees without children pay 0.6 points more for care.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a gross salary of €45,000 a year after tax in Germany?
With the default settings of the calculator (a single employee without children), a gross salary of €45,000 a year leaves about €29,683 a year, €2,474 a month, in 2026. Tax and contributions take 34% of the gross pay, and each extra unit you earn loses 46%.
How much is a gross salary of €80,000 a year after tax in Germany?

What is the difference between tax class I and class III?
Class I is for single employees. Class III is for the higher earning partner of a married couple when the other partner has little or no income: the tax is calculated on half of the income and doubled. On €60,000 the income tax is €9,328 in class I and €4,776 in class III.
How much does church tax cost?
Church tax is a share of the income tax: 8% in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% elsewhere. On €60,000 in a state with 9% it adds €840 a year.

How much notice and severance does a German employer owe?
The employer's notice is four weeks to the 15th or the end of a month, rising to one month after two years and up to seven months after 20 years (section 622 BGB). Severance is not a general legal right. For a dismissal for operational reasons the customary figure is half a monthly salary per year of service: for 10 years on €60,000 that is €25,000.
What is the minimum wage in Germany?
€14 an hour in 2026. Paid leave is at least 20 working days on a five day week.
Is the result an official figure?
No. It is an estimate for planning. Your payslip is the real number: employers apply their own withholding tables, benefits and agreements, and the rules of Germany change from year to year.
Is my salary stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server.
