Each one lowers the tax by a fixed amount.

How net salary works in Portugal

IRS is charged on the gross annual pay minus the specific deduction of €4,587, or the social security you paid when that is larger, on a progressive scale of nine brackets from 12.2% to 48%. Married couples with one income are taxed on half of the income, twice, and each dependant lowers the tax by €600.

The social security contribution (TSU) is 11% for the employee and 23.75% for the employer, on the whole pay with no ceiling. Together with the holiday and Christmas subsidies this makes a Portuguese contract cost its employer about 1.24 times the gross pay.

Withholding on your payslip follows the tables of the tax authority, not the annual scale, and is settled when you file the IRS return. The calculator shows the annual result divided across the payments, so the monthly figure can differ a little from the payslip.

Do I get 14 salaries in Portugal?

By law you receive the holiday subsidy and the Christmas subsidy, each worth a month of pay, so a contract of 1,500 euros a month is paid 14 times. Many employers offer to spread the subsidies over the twelve months: the yearly net pay is the same.

What is the minimum wage in Portugal?

€920 a month, paid 14 times, in 2026. Paid leave is 22 working days a year, and the meal allowance is tax free up to €6.15 a day in cash and €10.46 on a card.

How much compensation and notice does a dismissal bring?

For a collective dismissal or the end of a position, the notice is 15 days under one year of service, 30 days up to five years, 60 days up to ten and 75 days beyond. The compensation is 12 days of base pay per year of service. After 8 years on €25,000 that is about €6,575.

What is IRS Jovem?

A tax exemption for employees up to 35 years old, for ten years: 100% of the income is exempt in the first year, 75% in years two to four, 50% in years five to seven and 25% in years eight to ten, up to a ceiling. It is not included in the calculator.

Is the result an official figure?

No. It is an estimate for planning. Your payslip is the real number: employers apply their own withholding tables, benefits and agreements, and the rules of Portugal change from year to year.

Is my salary stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server.
