How net salary works in the United States

Federal income tax is charged on taxable income, which is the gross pay minus any pre tax 401(k) and the standard deduction. The rate rises in brackets from 10% to 37%, and each rate applies only to the part of the income inside its bracket.

FICA pays for Social Security and Medicare. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026, Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, and an Additional Medicare tax of 0.9% starts above $200,000. The employer pays the same Social Security and Medicare again on top.

State income tax varies from nothing to over 10% and some cities add their own. The calculator takes a flat rate you type, so use the rate of your state. Health insurance premiums, HSA contributions and other pre tax benefits are not included.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a gross salary of $60,000 a year after tax in the United States?

With the default settings of the calculator (a single employee without children), a gross salary of $60,000 a year leaves about $50,390 a year, $4,199 a month, in 2026. Tax and contributions take 16% of the gross pay, and each extra unit you earn loses 20%.

How much is a gross salary of $120,000 a year after tax in the United States?

With the default settings of the calculator (a single employee without children), a gross salary of $120,000 a year leaves about $93,250 a year, $7,771 a month, in 2026. Tax and contributions take 22.3% of the gross pay, and each extra unit you earn loses 30%.

How much federal income tax do I pay on a salary of $80,000?

For a single filer in 2026, taxable income is $80,000 minus the $16,100 standard deduction, and the federal income tax comes to about $8,770. Social Security adds $4,960 and Medicare $1,160.

Does a 401(k) lower my take home pay?

It lowers it by less than the contribution. On $80,000, putting 10% in a 401(k) takes $8,000 from the paycheck but cuts the federal income tax from $8,770 to $7,010. Social Security and Medicare are still charged on the full pay. The employee limit for 2026 is $24,500.

What is FICA?

FICA is the payroll tax for Social Security and Medicare. The employee pays 6.2% for Social Security up to $184,500 and 1.45% for Medicare on all wages, and the employer pays the same amounts.

Which states have no income tax on wages?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming do not tax wages, and Washington taxes only some capital gains. Type 0 in the state field for them.

Is there a notice period or severance pay in the United States?

Employment is at will: federal law sets no notice period and no severance. Employers with 100 or more employees must give 60 days of written notice of a plant closing or mass layoff under the WARN Act. Contracts, company policy and some state laws can add more.

Is the result an official figure?

No. It is an estimate for planning. Your payslip is the real number: employers apply their own withholding tables, benefits and agreements, and the rules of the United States change from year to year.

Is my salary stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation happens in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server.
