What you get
England and Scotland
Scotland has six income tax bands with different rates, so the calculator has its own set for it.
The Personal Allowance taper
The £12,570 allowance shrinks by 1 for every 2 earned above £100,000, which is why the marginal rate reaches 60% in that stretch.
Rules with a date
The rates and ceilings of the United Kingdom live in one file, with the year and the date they were last checked printed under the tool.
Private by design
The calculation runs in your browser. The salary you type never reaches a server.
How net salary works in the United Kingdom
Income tax is charged on income above the Personal Allowance of £12,570. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the rate is 20% on the first £37,700 of taxable income, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. Scotland has starter, basic, intermediate, higher, advanced and top rates from 19% to 48%.
Employee National Insurance is 8% of earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above. It is charged on the whole pay even when a pension is taken before tax. The employer pays 15% on pay above £5,000.
Workplace pensions under auto-enrolment take 5% from you and at least 3% from the employer on the band of earnings between £6,240 and £50,270. Student loan repayments are 9% of the pay above the threshold of your plan, and 6% for a postgraduate loan.
